In the 1,800’s the Black Shouldered Peafowl was introduced to USA. The Black Shouldered Peafowl breed is a pattern mutation of the Indian Blue Peafowl. The Black Shouldered Peacock is the second most common peafowl breed within the Us. They are quite different from the Indian Blue Peacock
The main difference between the Indian Blue Peacock and the Black Shouldered Peacock is that the Black Shouldered Peacock has plain black wings with a greenish blue iridescent sheen. The plain colouration of the Black Shouldered peacock is due to a recessive gene.
The Black Shouldered Peahen is very pretty to look at. They are quite different from the Indian Blue Peahen. Black Shouldered Peahens are cream coloured and have a rusty colour neck combined with metallic green colouration. The Black Shouldered peahens colouration can vary significantly between peahens. Some black shouldered peahens show significantly darker mottled cream and brown feathers on their backs. Also the amount of green around the Black Shouldered peahens neck varies from peahen to peahen. Some Black Shouldered Peahens are much lighter in colour.
Black shouldered peafowl can live and roam free around a garden, land or farm. There must be some protection from the weather for the Black Shouldered Peafowl and appropriate places available for perching and keeping out of the rain wind and elements.
Breeding Black Shouldered Peafowl
The Black Shouldered Peachick is born yellow and within a day the wing tips have changed to a buff colour. Consequently this buff colouring on the wings distinguishes the black shouldered peachick from the White Peachick very early on. Then they are quite different to white peachicks.
As the Black Shouldered Peachicks mature the colour of the male peachick darkens. The peacock loses the white colouration across their body gradually over the first three years of its life. The tail of the Black Shouldered Peafowl will initially display white marking which will disappear as the peacock matures. As a result it is easy to sex black shouldered peacocks as early as three months old.
Consequently at three years old the back of the Black Shouldered peafowl is black with a sheen of blue green.
The Black Shouldered peahen remains a light colour. There is some variety in colour between the black shouldered peahens with some showing more colour around the neck. The colour can also vary with some black shouldered peahens displaying darker colour on their backs.
The Black Shouldered Peafowl will breed true Black Shouldered to Black Shouldered. Indian Blue bred to Black shouldered peafowl will result in Indian Blue Peafowl or Black Shouldered Peafowl. To see a video of Black Shouldered peachicks click here
